Twin Features for both the
NEMA Midgets & NEMA LITES!

bentleyssaloon.com
Bentley's Saloon will be rewarding the NEMA Midgets & LITES  Saturday heat winners with gift certificates and
T- shirts. Bentley is hoping to see all his NEMA friends after the races at the Saloon. If not, then down at Seekonk in two weeks where he will be the Grand Marshal for the 16th running of the Boston Louie Memorial on 9/29.

Nocella, Cabral NEMA Winners
at “The Ridge”
Scarborough, ME – Defending champion and current point leader Randy Cabral (Bertrand 47) ended the streak at 10, capturing Sunday’s 30-lap Northeastern Midget Association feature on PASS 300 Weekend at Beech Ridge Speedway. The streak of NEMA having no double winners reached double figures Saturday night with Anthony Nocella’s triumph in the Seymour 4.

Coming from the seventh starting spot, Cabral took command with a daring outside move around Greg Stoehr five laps into Sunday’s event. He went on to finish ahead of Stoehr, Nocella, Mike Ordway (Bertrand 47b) and Maine stock car standout Trevor Sanborn, the latter making his NEMA debut in the Bundy 2.

Cabral joked in victory lane, pointing out he, unlike Nocella, “was able to drive to victory lane.” Nocella indeed walked there on Saturday night, a flat right rear causing him to spin just a few yards after taking the checkered.

Greg Stoehr was second on Saturday night as well, followed by Cabral, Russ Stoehr (Dumo’s Desire 45) and Jim Miller (Miller 3m).

“It was one of those you hope it’s going to stick deals,” said Cabral of his winning move. It was his 33rd career victory, tying him with Bill Eldridge for fifth on the all-time NEMA win list.

Cabral lined up beside Stoehr following the only caution on lap five. Stoehr got the jump but Cabral went to the outside (“my car ran there the best all day”) and exited two with the edge. He opened up a five car length only to have Stoehr, who had the fastest lap (13.446), battle back. They actually touched on the backstretch on lap 24, Stoehr dropping back after that and finishing just over a second behind Cabral.

Nocella’s winning move also came on a restart against Stoehr. With eight laps left he too used the outside to take command. Yellow flew again three laps later and, despite it being a single file restart, Stoehr made a valiant inside challenge before settling for second.

Ironically Nocella, who took full advantage of the outside groove from the start, was “trying to protect my tires” moving through traffic. Aware that “something was happening,” Nocella was “just trying to hang on the best I could” over the final laps.

The Boston Louie Memorial Saturday night, Sept. 29 at Seekonk looms next for NEMA. The club’s most coveted trophy, “The Louie” is part of the Seekonk 200 and also features the ISMA Supermodifieds

The ten races without a double winner equals a mark set back in 1994, long before Cabral or Nocella began racing.
Cabral’s victories have come over a 12-year span.
Jeff Horn and Jim Santa Maria could not start on Sunday. Todd Bertrand moved into the Cabral 35 when his usual Bertrand 39 could not go on Sunday.
Medeiros, Chambers
“LITE’ Up The Ridge
Scarborough, ME – Carl Medeiros Jr. collected his fourth NEMA Lites win and Alan Chambers checkered for the first time in 25-lap features at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway’s Pass 300 Weekend.

Medeiros was in the right spot at the right time on Saturday night. He inherited the lead when Kenny Johnson lost a motor late in the event and then survived a restart. Medeiros is the division’s only multiple winner this season.

On Sunday, Chambers beat Danny Cugini by less than half a car length in a sizzling display. Both drivers came back from disqualifications on Saturday. Behind by three quarters of a straightaway at the halfway point, Cugini rallied over the final circuits, his last-ditch dive to the inside of Chambers falling .046 of a second short.

Sunday’s race also featured Andy Barrows claiming third by the same margin over Jake Stergios. Bethany Stoehr, who wound up second on Saturday night, grabbed a fifth on Sunday.

PJ Stergois, driving the car his brother drove Sunday, was third Saturday night followed by Ian Cumens and Avery Stoehr.

Next stop for the Lites is the Boston Louie Memorial Saturday night, Sept. 29 at Seekonk Speedway.

NEMA MOVES ON TO BEECH RIDGE
Nine winners in nine starts! Not since 1994 has the Northeastern Midget Association spread the wealth around like it is doing presently. It was ten in ten back then.

Ironically, the driver who ended the streak in ’94, Russ Stoehr, then driving for Bruce Beane, will be out to extend it when NEMA visits Beech Ridge Speedway Sept. 15 and 16. Stoehr hopes to provide the Dumo’s Desire team with its first win in 2012.

NEMA will run 30 lap features on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The NEMA Lites are on both schedules as well. Beech Ridge last hosted NEMA and the Lites back in 2008.

The current streak is “a credit to the rules and the handicapping,” offers Tim Bertrand. Bertrand Motorsports is, in fact, the only double winner so far in 2012– claiming wins with Randy Cabral and Todd Bertrand. A winner at Waterford on Sept. 1, Todd Bertrand can become NEMA’s first back-to-back winner in 19 races.

More evidence, Bertrand contends, that “NEMA has stepped up its game when it comes to set up. There is a lot of home work being done. There is no other way to be successful.”

Others looking for repeat wins in Maine are Greg Stoehr, John Zych Jr., Adam Cantor, Seth Carlson, Anthony Marvuglio, Jim Miller and Mike Horn. In several cases, NEMA has set new standards for speed.

Just like it was back in 2008, Bertrand and Cabral take the point lead to the Pine Tree State. Stoehr and the Dumo’s Desire team are 23 behind while the brothers Bertrand have climbed into third, 73 back.

The Chris Derosiers/Marvuglio combo has some Beech Ridge experience. Jeremy Frankowski was the winner in ’07 driving for Chris DeRosiers. Marvuglio chased home winner Todd Bettencourt in the 2008 Lites feature.

Joey Payne Jr., a winner back in 2004, was second to Bobby Santos Jr. in ’08 and third behind Frankoski and Aaron Wall in ’07. Russ Stoehr (1998, 99) and Jeff Horn (1993) have also won at Beech Ridge.

NEMA’s only multiple winner Carl Medeiros Jr. is looking for success number four in Lites action. Looking for a second win will be Ryan Bigelow, Randy Cabral, Brandon Igo and Avery Stoehr. Bethany Stoehr, Ian Cumens, Dylan Duhaime, Christian Briggs and R.J. Tufano are among the other contenders.

Active drivers Jeff Horn, Russ and Greg Stoehr and Payne were all part of that ten-for-10 in ’94. Others were Nokie Fornoro and Drew Fornoro, Mike Seymour, Babe Shaw, Lou Cicconi and Joey Coy. The club seven-for-seven in ‘07 before Ben Seitz became a two-time winner.
NEMA has been going to Beech Ridge since 1955 when George Tilton won on the dirt. Drew Fornoro is the win leader with four.
Beech Ridge is one of 14 different tracks where Russ Stoehr has claimed at least one NEMA feature. It is one of the nine tracks Jeff Horn has won at and one of eight where Joey Payne Jr. has checkered. A win would increase Randy Cabral’s list to eight as well.
