WISCASSET SPEEDWAY MEET & GREET
Bertrand, Cabral Storm to NEMA Wins
on Wiscassett’s True Value Night
Todd Bertrand capped off a perfect day, with a new track record, heat race win and dominating feature win in the NEMA portion of the Northeastern Midget Association event. Randy Cabral drove the Frank Manafort #76 to victory in the Lites portion of the show, in an event that produced a barn burning finish. A beautiful day and impressive fan turnout made for a fantastic return to Wiscassett for NEMA.

Bertrand started off the day quick, setting a new track record in qualifying with a 12.97 lap, the first midget ever in the 12 second bracket. Driving the family's #1 car, after his 48 machine suffered mechanical failure at the opening event, Bertrand also handily won his heat race.

In the feature event, Bertrand would drive into the lead on the first lap, after Matt O'Brien and Doug Cleveland brought the field to the green. Three laps into the feature, it was all Bertrand Motorsports up front, occupying the top four spots, but attrition quickly started to play a factor, as Bertrand's teammate Troy Decaire was the first to drop out with a broken fuel pump cable. A short while later, Randy Cabral, while running third would drop out with a broken steering bolt - which left previous feature winner Avery Stoehr to chase Bertrand.

Bertrand would beat back Stoehr on two restarts, and unfortunately Stoehr would drop out with six laps remaining with a broken rocker arm. Dan Cugini posted his best finish in quite some time with the NEMA group finishing second, followed by points leader Mike Horn, Doug Cleveland, Andy Lunt, Matt O'Brien, Avery Stoehr, Rob Spino, Randy Cabral and Jim Chambers.

"I'm super excited that we got this 1 car to victory lane," said Bertrand. "It was a new car last year and we struggled a bit getting it going. I really need to thank my brother Tim for putting me in it this weekend, my Dad for helping get it ready along with Alan Wills and Dave Igo, and my whole family including my wife Mariah, Scotty, Ruth, Tucker, Ava and the gang. It was great to win with all of them here," he said.

In the Lites feature, Chris Vose bolted out into the lead from his pole starting position. Vose was quickly pursued by Randy Cabral, driving the Seymour prepared Frank Manafort #76. Cabral would go by Vose for the lead, but the caution flew.

On the restart, Cabral would go by Vose again, and unfortunately Vose's day would come to an end a few laps later as he coasted into the infield bringing out another caution. On the restart, it was again all Cabral when the green flew.

As the laps wound down, Cabral would begin pulling away, but with five to go, the young Jake Trainor broke free from traffic and started tracking down Cabral. With two to go, Trainor was on the back bumper of Cabral, and the duo approached a lapped car. Trainor would go low, and they sandwiched the lapped car of Drew Eldridge in between them, but Cabral would come out on top. Cabral would go on to take down the victory over Trainor, PJ Stergios, Richie Coy, Ryan Locke, Jim Cataldo, Matt Merry, Anthony Marvuglio, Drew Eldridge and Paul Scally.

"I'd really like to thank Frank Manafort for putting me in this car. He's under the weather right now and I really wanted to win this for him. Also would like to thank the Seymours, the car was spot on and their preparation is flawless," said Cabral. "To win in front of a packed crowd at Wiscassett is always awesome, we love this place," he said.

NEMA picks back up with the Lites this weekend at Star Speedway, with discounted grandstands admission. Following that, both divisions are at the Boston Louie Memorial on June 26th at Seekonk Speedway.
