Stoehr, Locke Shine in

Boston Louie at Seekonk |
For the past 20 years, the race held in honor of the
Massachusetts based car owner - "Boston Louie" Seymour, who
campaigned his winning midgets, sprints and Silver Crown
cars across America, has brought together the very best in
open wheel Midget racing. This past Wednesday at Seekonk
Speedway was no different as Avery Stoehr fought off the
NEMA field to take down his first Boston Louie Memorial
victory.
On March 25, 2017, the most accomplished
pavement open wheel racer in America , Dave Steele of Tampa
Fl. passed away at Desoto Speedway in Bradenton while
attempting to win his 100th sprint car race in the state of
Florida. The NEMA Lites portion of the show has since been
dedicated in honor of Steele, this year with the young Ryan
Locke besting a star studded field, including Ken Schrader,
in the 50 lap event.
In the NEMA portion of the
event, Paul Scally took down the fast time of the day in his
qualifier, after struggling with mechanical issues during
the day. Scally also won the qualifier, and also took down
the perseverance award for the evening.
In the NEMA
feature, Doug Cleveland and Danny Cugini led the field to
the green flag. Unfortunately, Cugini's evening would come
to an end on lap one as his engine expired. When the green
flag flew, young Avery Stoehr in the Bertrand 39 blasted
around the outside of the field and into the lead. Stoehr
began setting a torrid pace, until the caution flew on lap
twelve.
When the field lined up for the green flag,
Stoehr would pull away from John Zych, who had made his way
to second at the time. Stoehr's march continued, as he
clicked off six laps in the 11.1 range, running the fastest
time of the day on lap fifteen, a blistering 11.10 second
lap.
As the laps wound down, Stoehr extended his lead
and would go on to take down the victory, and the sixth
Boston Louie win for Bertrand Motorsports in the last seven
events. Zych would finish second followed by Randy Cabral.
Stoehr's victory also puts him into the points lead. Todd
Bertrand was fourth followed by Doug Coby, Paul Scally, Doug
Cleveland, Matt O'Brien, Andy Lunt, and Lanson Fornoro.
Cabral was the hard charger in the NEMA feature and Stoehr
led the most laps.
"This is the biggest win of my
career," said Stoehr. "To win the Boston Louie is a dream
for all NEMA racers, and I've been in victory lane before
with my Dad. To do it myself, is just awesome. I need to
thank Tim, Gil, Cara, Curt, Dave, Kayla, Norah, Jon, my Dad
and the entire team for getting us here," said Stoehr.
In the Lites portion of the show, Randy Cabral took down
the fast time portion of the event in qualifying, sponsored
by iRacing. In the qualifiers, Ben Mikitarian and Jim
Cataldo took down the wins, sponsored by Valeri Construction
and Mike & Lu Jarrett.
In the feature event, young
Jake Trainor jumped out into the lead from his pole starting
position. Trainor was quickly pursued by Anthony Marvuglio
in the Cabral #35 machine. Trainor and Marvuglo have been
some of the stars in the early portion of the Lites season,
running 1/3 in points thus far.
As the feature rolled
on, young Ryan Locke was working his way through the field.
Locke was sitting in third by lap twelve, and then would
pass Marvuglio for second on lap thirteen. Behind Locke,
Trainor and Marvuglio, seventh place starter and former
NASCAR star, Kenny Schrader, was working his way through the
field along with Randy Cabral.
As the laps wound
down, Locke would make his bid for the lead against Trainor
on lap 39. From there, Locke would pour on the heat, running
the fastest lap of the feature and of the day on lap 42, a
blistering 11.768 second lap, one of the quickest in recent
years in the Memorial event.
Locke would go on to
pull off the victory over Trainor, Marvuglio, Schrader,
Cabral, up and comer Dominic Elicone, Matt Janisch, Alan
Chambers, Jim Cataldo and Riche Coy.
"We started 6th
which we pulled from the redraw. We had no real strategy
other than take my time and keep the car under me for the
first 30-35 laps and save the tires," said Locke. "I knew we
had a good chance right from the drop of the green, as I was
able to go three wide and the car stuck. I can't thank
everyone enough who helps me - Locke Crane, Shawmut
Equipment, Chester General Store, along with my parents,
family and grand parents," concluded Locke.
The hard
charger was Riche Coy, Long Distance awards went to Calvin
Carrol and Matt Janisch, and the top father and son team
went to Jeff & Ryan Locke. |
