R. Locke, Cabral
Conquer NEMA /
Ames True Value Night at
Wiscassett |
The Northeastern Midget Association visited
the Wiscassett Raceway this past Saturday evening,
and were welcomed by the Jordan family and a packed
crowd, at one of NEMA's favorite stops.
In
the 50 lap Lites event, a wild feature saw Ryan
Locke take down the victory and in the NEMA race,
seven time Northeastern Midget Association champion,
Randy Cabral, snapped a long winless streak this
past weekend. It was Cabral's 20th consecutive
season with a victory, extending his NEMA record,
and 20th season with a victory, one behind Drew
Fornoro's 21 seasons with a victory.
In the
50 lap Lites feature, youngster Chase Locke jumped
out into an early lead, and the caution would fly
after contact sent Paul Scally for a spin. When the
green flag flew again, Locke bolted out into the
lead again. Behind him, Anthony Marvuglio had made
his way into second, and Richie Coy in third.
Behind the leaders, Paul Scally who had gone to
the tail, was making his march to the front of the
field again. Scally was running sixth by lap ten. On
lap 35, Randy Cabral had a near miss, nearly
spinning, and two laps later, Cabral was a lap down
to Chase Locke.
Locke began to set a torrid
pace, in heavy lapped traffic doing a masterful job
that was reminiscent of a wiley veteran, but his car
began to emit a trail of smoke. Locke began to slow
down, as Cabral would get his lap back, and Ryan
Locke had driven into second place at the time. On
lap 40 Locke's motor would expire, ending what would
have been a cinderella night for the young man.
On the restart, Ryan Locke would jump out into
the lead, and Cabral would use the high line and
Scally in tow. Over the final laps, Ryan Locke
dominated the feature, with Cabral second, Paul
"Dangerous" Scally third, Richie Coy, Jim Cataldo,
Kyle Valeri, Dennis O'Brien, Chris Vosey, Andrew
Lunt and Anthony Marvuglio completed the top ten.
"We started 9th and it was a weird race with
a lot of surprises," said Locke. "It was an
emotional roller coaster. There was one long 35 lap
green run where I was able to throw it to the
outside and pick up some spots after the restart. I
saw Chase start to smoke, and it really sucked when
I saw him slow down, I really thought we had a 1/2
run going for our family, he was definitely way
faster than me. I felt really bad for him," Said
Locke.
In the NEMA feature, Todd Bertrand
drove from his fourth starting spot around the
outside of Matt O'Brien to take the lead on lap one.
Bertrand began to set a torrid pace, in the 13.1
range, and pulled out to a large lead over teammate
Alby Ovitt.
On lap eleven, disaster struck
for long time club member, Matt O'Brien, when his
car broke and rocketed into the turn one wall.
O'Brien was taken to the hospital, but released
later with no injuries.
On the green flag,
Bertrand's car faltered and he came to a stop with a
flat right rear tire two laps later. His team was
able to change the tire, and get him back out at the
rear of the field.
Ovitt would inherit the
lead, but was overtaken by teammate Randy Cabral on
lap fifteen. Ovitt, fighting a loose race car, was
also passed by teammate Avery Stoehr on lap sixteen,
and they would finish this way with Cabral taking
down the win, points leader Stoehr second, Ovitt
third, John Zych, Mike Horn, Paul Scally, Bertrand,
Eddie Leclerc, Matt O'Brien and Andy Lunt.
"We threw everything we could at this car tonight,"
said Cabral. "We've never run this setup before, but
it worked out really well for us. I'm happy to keep
the streak alive and really need to thank Tim and
his family and my Dad for helping us get here," said
Cabral.
NEMA is back in action on October 4th
at LEE USA's Oktoberfest. |

Leclerc,
Luggelle Return to NEMA
at Wiscassett
Speedway |
This Saturday the Northeastern Midget
Association makes a return to one of its favorite
venues, Wiscassett Speedway. Ames True Value joins
again as the premier sponsor for the night.
The last time the club visited Wiscassett Todd
Bertrand took down the NEMA show and Randy Cabral
scored in the Lites.
Highlighting the
evening will be a 50 lap NEMA Lites feature.
The club is also welcoming back long-time car
owner Mike Luggelle and his famed #77 machine.
Luggelle campaigned full time on the NEMA circuit
for over 20 years and has only been competing part
time since 2010.
Driving for Luggelle this
weekend will be Eddie Leclerc. Leclerc, brother of
2017 crew chief of the year Rachel Leclerc, competed
full time with the NEMA Lites for a number of years.
Leclerc also announced that he will be headed to
NEMA full time in 2020, with the purchase of a new
car this week.
"Paul Scally and my sister
Rachel put this together for me for this weekend and
possibly the remaining races if all goes well. My
last race with NEMA was in 2010, and I believe we
had 3 wins that year in the Lites," said Leclerc.
"I'm very excited to get back in the car
this weekend and even more excited for next season
to bring a new car into the club. My family
purchased a new car, and we look forward to the
start of the season in 2020," he said.
The
gates open at 1:00 PM with practice starting at 2:00
PM this Saturday in Maine. |
