Cabral, Stoehr Best in NEMA's Iron Mike
Memorial at Monadnock |
Randy Cabral pulled off a pass on Paul Scally with
five laps remaining in the thirty lap Northeastern Midget
Association Iron Mike Scrivani Memorial, in a race that went
wire to wire with no cautions. In the Lites segment, Avery
Stoehr beat back Ryan Locke on a restart with one lap to go,
taking down a special win for the family in the Scrivani
#21. The race commemorated Iron Mike Scrivani, long time
NEMA car owner, and famous open wheel owner in the
Northeast.
Proprietor of the legendary "Mike's Truck
Stop" in Wrentham, Scrivani's car-owning career began in the
1930s with the Big Cars and it included a successful run
with the Modifieds in the late 1960s and early '70s, But
Midgets were clearly his first love. Jerry Russo drove the
Scrivani midget in NEMA's first race at Seekonk Speedway on
Memorial Day of 1953. Mike's son, Mike Scrivani Jr., went on
to become a NEMA legend, and served as President of the club
for many years, currently serving as the Club's Vice
President.
In the Lites event, Avery Stoehr, driving
the Scrivani 21 was able to get out into the lead early. It
appeared that Stoehr was going to run away and hide easily,
but a caution with one lap to go made the final laps of the
race exciting. On the first restart attempt, an eager Locke
edged ahead of Stoehr, but race officials called back the
restart. On the ensuing restart, Stoehr got the jump and
bolted back out into the lead and took down the victory.
"It's a great honor to win the Iron Mike in the Scrivani
21. I really appreciate Mike putting me in this car for this
event, and wanted nothing more than to win for him and his
family," said Stoehr. The win marked the second for Stoehr
in a week, as he won the NEMA portion of last week's LEE USA
Speedway event. Ryan Locke finished second, followed by PJ
Stergios, Alby Ovitt, Anthony Marvuglio, Kyle Valeri, Dennis
Potter, Riche Coy, Matt Seavy, Jim Cataldo and Chase Locke.
In the NEMA event, Paul Scally jumped out into the lead
on the first lap as he and Alan Chambers brought the field
to green. Chambers, a heat race winner earlier in the
evening, followed, until Randy Cabral broke free and began
to chase Scally. Scally would execute perfect laps, holding
Cabral at bay for the first 25 laps, with teammate Todd
Bertrand hot on his tail. With five laps to go, Scally would
get loose in turn three, and allow Cabral to make a pass in
turn three. Cabral would go on to win followed by Bertrand,
Scally, Avery Stoehr, Alan Chambers, Jake Trainor, Mike
Horn, Doug Cleveland, Alby Ovitt and Matt Merry.
"Twenty years ago on this same day, I won my first Boston
Louie Memorial race, and my first victory. To win the Iron
Mike on the same weekend is unbelievable," said Cabral.
Cabral has more consecutive seasons with a victory than any
other driver in the history of NEMA. |

Iron Mike Scrivani
Memorial
|
Out of a truck stop in Wrentham, Massachusetts came
midgets that dominated East coast racing with both NEMA and
ARDC. By day "Iron" Mike Scrivani, Sr., ran his truck stop,
and on the weekends he loaded up and headed to wherever NEMA
was racing. With his ever present cigar in his mouth
Scrivani was a fixture in the NEMA pits throughout the
1960's and 70's, fielding meticulous, immaculate cars for
the likes of Noki Fornoro, Butch Walsh, and Dave Humphrey,
all NEMA champions. Truthfully, Iron Mike's midget exploits
were a full time job, with the team racing sometimes in over
50 NEMA and ARDC events per year.
While he lived up
to his nickname, Iron Mike never hesitated to help a fellow
racer in need. Have a tough night? Need some parts? Iron
Mike would tell you to show up at the Truck Stop on Sunday
morning. There are probably guys who still have his parts in
their garage.
Iron Mike passed in 1983, and was
inducted into the NEAR Hall of Fame in 2007. His place in
NEMA and midget history is secure, and son Mike Scrivani,
Jr. continues the Iron Mike legacy, fielding championship
cars in both NEMA and NEMA Lights. The old man would be
proud. |
