Cabral, Stergios Take
Shane Hammond Memorial
Thompson World Series Wins |
The Northeastern Midget Association visited the
Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park for the annual ACT World
Series of Racing this past Saturday and Sunday, as 30 winged
NEMA warriors filled the pits for the annual Shane Hammond
Memorial. Randy Cabral fended off an early race challenge by
John Zych and a late race challenge by teammate Ben Seitz to
take down the NEMA victory and come one step closer to his
eighth championship, and PJ Stergios dominated the Lites
portion of the racing card on Sunday.
NEMA
celebrates the life of fellow competitor Hammond each year,
who was tragically killed at Thompson in April of 2008.
Shane's fatal crash was a cold April day in 2008 at
Thompson. There was chaos all around the crash site and
complete silence in the stands. It did not look good yet we
held onto hope as many prayed. He was just 27, wheeling the
car of his dreams, the #4 Mike Jarret, Nokie Fornoro NEMA
midget which he had shaken down on many occasions. He felt
proud and privileged that day to be chosen to wheel this
ferocious machine. He was living his dream especially with
Nokie as his team mate, he loved that man and how he shared
all his inside information about each track they ran
together. Shane was respected and loved by the NEMA family
and he shared all he had heart & soul with everyone in the
club," said Hammond's mother, Deb Marvuglio.
In the
NEMA feature, Randy Cabral got closer to the Northeastern
Midget Association (NEMA) championship by winning the 25-lap
Shane Hammond Memorial. Cabral snagged the lead from Ben
Seitz on lap eight and quickly built up a comfortable
margin.
John Zych Jr. passed Seitz for second shortly
followed a restart for Jake Trainor's mechanical failure,
and Zych seemed to be closing on Cabral. But as Zych came
out of turn four with seven laps to go, his engine gave up
the ghost. That left Cabral clear to cruise for the victory.
Seitz, Avery Stoehr, Todd Bertrand, and Joey Payne completed
the top-five. Doug Cleveland, John Zych, Mike Horn, Jake
Trainor, and Richie Coy rounded out the top 10.
Candia, NH's P.J. Stergios took a dominating victory in the
25-lap NEMA Lites feature. Stergios moved to the front early
and faced some initial pressure from Randy Cabral, who had
won the NEMA Midget and Pro 4 Modified features the night
before. But his bid for a weekend trifecta was denied as
Stergios marched off and left him behind in a caution-free
race.
The best battle was a fracas for fourth between
Jake Trainor, Richie Morocco, Richie Coy, and Jim Santa
Maria. Plainville, MA's Morocco eventually broke out of the
tussle and stole third from Kyle Valeri with two laps left
for good measure. Valeri ended up fourth with Trainor, Coy,
Santa Maria, Mikey Pernisiglio, Dylan Coutu, and Joey Bailey
the balance of the top-10. |

World Series Getting Twisted
with
Big Saturday Card
ACT, PASS, and
NEMA Headline
Eight-Division Prelude to Thompson
300 - |
Waterbury, VT & Naples, ME -- The 59th
Annual Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing arrives at
Connecticut's Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park this
Friday-Sunday, October 8-10. While many fans are hotly
anticipating the return of the $20,000-to-win Thompson 300
on Sunday, the Twisted Tea World Series Saturday card on
October 9 is equally intriguing with a packed card of local
and touring action.
Saturday will be the perfect
prelude to the 300-lap Sunday showdown. Many of the Outlaw
Open Modified Series stars that are chasing the prestigious
Thompson 300 crown are planning to take part in Saturday's
open practice. Fans who arrive early get to see Tour-type
Modified superstars like Doug Coby, Ronnie Williams, Patrick
Emerling, Justin Bonsignore, Ron Silk, and Jonathan
McKennedy tune up for the first Thompson 300 since 2005.
Once the 2:30pm post time arrives for Twisted Tea World
Series Saturday, eight divisions will battle in qualifying
and World Series features. The American-Canadian Tour (ACT)
Late Models and Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late
Models headline the Saturday card with a pair of 75-lap
features. The season for both is nearing its end, making the
event crucial for series regulars.
The ACT Late Model Tour has a
razor-close title battle on its hands. Turner, ME's Ben Rowe
leads Center Conway, NH's D.J. Shaw by just one point with
two events to go. Both are multi-time PASS champions
pursuing their first ACT title. Rowe and Shaw, along with
former Seekonk Speedway champion Ryan Kuhn, are planning
double-duty on Saturday in both the ACT and PASS features.
The rest of the ACT top-five has tightened up between
New Salem, MA's Tom Carey III, North Dartmouth, MA's Derek
Gluchacki, and Williamstown, VT's Jimmy Hebert. Carey and
Gluchacki are both Thompson Speedway regulars with Carey
owning a victory at this year's Icebreaker. Hebert is a
former ACT winner at Thompson who has finished 1st, 2nd, and
1st in the last three ACT Tour events.
Carey,
Gluchacki, Kuhn, Woody Pitkat, and Stephen Donahue are just
some of the drivers expected to race in both Friday's
Thompson Late Model championship event and Saturday's Sunoco
World Series 75 presented by Twisted Tea. The 30-lap Friday
feature pays $1,200 to win while the Saturday ACT event is
worth $2,500 to win, making it a potentially lucrative
weekend for Late Model teams.
The PASS Super Late Models have only two races
remaining in the 2021 PASS National Champion Series. Hudson,
NH's Derek Griffith, the 2018 National Champion, has a
healthy lead over D.J. Shaw. Griffith won the PASS event at
the Icebreaker, making him one to watch on Saturday.
Third-place national point driver Jake Matheson of
Hillsboro, NH is coming off his first career PASS podium at
Vermont's Thunder Road Speedbowl.
Saturday's race
also counts for PASS North and New England South points,
making it a crucial stop for two other championship quests.
Hallowell, ME's Johnny Clark is three races away from his
seventh PASS North championship -- but his first since 2011.
Despite some late handling trouble at Thunder Road, he
maintains a strong lead over Dan Winter, Ben Rowe, and Kate
Re. Shaw is the New England South leader ahead of Clark and
Matheson. Other notable names on the Thompson entry list
include Eddie "The Outlaw" MacDonald, Brandon Barker, Ryan
Kuhn, and Cory Casagrande.
The
Northeastern Midget Association is back for its annual World
Series appearance. The full-scale NEMA Midgets are running
25 laps as part of Twisted Tea World Series Saturday while
the NEMA LITES go 25 laps on Sunday. Randy Cabral
leads the NEMA point standings with two events to go as he
pursues his eighth championship. Avery Stoehr, the 2019 NEMA
Champion, will try to gain ground at Thompson as will
three-time winner John Zych and two-time winner Paul Scally.
Another notable event on Saturday's World Series
schedule is the middle round of the
Sunoco Modified Triple Crown Series. The Thompson
Sunoco Modifieds are running three 30-lap features on World
Series weekend with each paying $1,500 to win. That means
racers like Keith Rocco, Mike Christopher Jr., Danny Cates,
and Andrew Molleur can pocket a big chunk of change for a
weekend of work. Points are also on the line for the 2021
Sunoco Modified championship, which will be decided on
Sunday, October 10 prior to the Thompson 300.
The
North East Mini Stock Tour
crowns their 2021 champion at Twisted Tea World Series
Saturday. Berlin, NH's Cody LeBlanc has a comfortable point
lead heading into the finale but is scrambling for a car
after his primary machine blew an engine at last Friday's
Thunder Road event. The rest of the four-cylinder speedsters
will be on hand to tackle the high banks, including 2020
champion Desmond Skillings, Mike Viens, Nick Anderson, and
Matt Sonnhalter.
If fans want to watch one of the
most wide-open Thompson title fights in recent history, look
no further than the Vandi Auto Supply Limited Sportsman.
Coming into Saturday, the top-four drivers are separated by
a mere two points. "Leadfoot" Larry Barnett, Corey Fanning,
Ryan Waterman, and Brent Gleason know that even one position
in a heat race could be the difference, so they are spending
the week searching for every ounce of speed they can find.
The EXIT Realty Pro Truck
Challenge is making its second Thompson appearance of
the year. Their Icebreaker feature came down to a
last-corner door-banger, and with drivers like Jim Boyle,
Randy Burr, and Emma Monahan trying to punch their ticket to
the championship playoff, the pressure will be turned up to
the maximum setting. Last but certainly not least, the
Pro 4 Modifieds of New England
are on the Saturday schedule for the annual Harry Kourafas
Memorial. The annual 22-lap feature is always a barnburner
with both the Limited and Unlimited division on track for
their next-to-last event of the year.
Thompson
Speedway Motorsports Park presents the 59th annual Sunoco
World Series of Speedway Racing from Friday, October 8 to
Sunday, October 10. The weekend is highlighted by the
$20,000-to-win Sunoco Thompson 300 for the Outlaw Open
Modified Series. The 17-division program also includes the
ACT Late Model Tour, PASS Super Late Models, Sunoco Modified
Triple Crown Series, NEMA Midgets and LITES, all local
divisions, and much more.
Advance tickets are
available at HappsNow ticketing platform:
www.happsnow.com/event/Thompson-Speedway-Motorsports-Park-YHPQ.
Three-day general admission to the Sunoco World Series is
$75 for adults, $20 for kids ages 6-12, and free for kids
ages 5 and under. Fans can also purchase single-day tickets
or a two-day Saturday-Sunday ticket. All three days of
racing will be televised live via pay-per-view on
Speed51.TV.
Both three-day and single-day pit passes are being offered.
These can only be purchased at the track on race days.

Thompson World Series Weekend
Kicks Off Friday
With 17-Division Slate
Thompson 300, ACT,
PASS Headline Full Weekend in 59th Annual Event |
FULL 3 DAY WORLD SERIES
SCHEDULE PRINTABLE PDF |
Story Courtesy of Souza Media |
Waterbury, VT & Naples, ME -- The long wait and
anticipation is finally over for race fans in
Connecticut. Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park will
roar back to life this coming Friday-Sunday, October
8-10 with the 59th Annual Sunoco World Series of
Speedway Racing on the high-banks.
The
weekend kicks off on Friday at 5:30pm with a
six-division slate, continues on Twisted Tea
Saturday with eight more feature races and ends on
Sunday with the return of the $20,000-to-win
Thompson 300 plus four other feature events. A total
of 17 divisions and series will help cap the track's
82nd season with the biggest names in Northeast
motorsports on-hand.
Sunday's return of the
Thompson 300 for the
stars of the Outlaw Open
Modified Series has been a long time coming.
For the first time since 2005, some of the top
Modified drivers from across the New England region
will be heading to Thompson to chase the big prize
in a race that combines classic short-track action
with the thrill of the unknown.
Teams have 16
tires they can use for the special event. This
includes the four tires they start the race on with
12 in the pit area to change during the race.
Strategy will be the name of the game. Team will
need both fuel and tires multiple times during the
event, and the challenge is figuring out when to pit
to take full advantage of caution periods.
Some drivers may pit early and stay out late on
older tires. A few are bound to pit in the final 30
laps if they get a caution and attempt to blast to
the front on fresh Hoosier rubber. The anticipation
surrounding the race is high and it's drawing the
best names to the Connecticut oval for 300 green
flag laps.
Reigning NASCAR Whelen Modified
Tour champion Justin Bonsignore leads the entry list
just two weeks after clinching his third series
title after another dominating year. He is joined by
six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby,
eight-time Thompson Sunoco Modified champion Keith
Rocco, Icebreaker 125 winner Ron Silk and two-time
Outlaw Open Modified winner Ronnie Williams.
After Silk won the Icebreaker 125, which was the
debut for the Outlaw Open Modified Series, Rocco won
the Thompson event in June. Williams has been to
Victory Lane in both races since, cashing on a
$5,000 prize in both. These drivers, and those who
have supported all of the Outlaw Open Modified
Series events, may have an advantage over names like
Bonsignore and Coby, who haven't turned a lap at
Thompson so far this year.
They aren't the
only big names in the field. Patrick Emerling, who
finished second in the Whelen Modified Tour
championship battle, is driving for Ted Anderson.
Matt Swanson, a podium finisher in multiple Outlaw
Open Modified Series events, will be back on track
in the famed "Old Blue" #3MA. They are joined by the
likes of Craig Lutz driving for Rameau Family
Motorsports plus Anthony Nocella, Jon McKennedy,
Chris Pasteryak, Eric Goodale, Dave Sapienza, Andy
Jankowiak, Max Zachem and more.
Chase
Dowling, who was on the podium in the Tripoint
Twisted Tea Showdown 75 in August, is heading back
to the track driving for Ben Dodge. He's joined by
young talent like Anthony Bello, Derek Robbie, Noah
Korner, Dylan Izzo and Andrew Molleur as some of the
other competitors in the field. Look out for the No.
16 Kluth Motorsports entry and names like Josh
Zentek, Nick Anglace and Tommy Barrett as well. The
field is deep, and anyone from top to bottom could
pull out the right strategy to take the big check.
Teams can practice on both Friday and Saturday, but
all qualifying and feature racing will take place on
Sunday.
The World Series weekend opens Friday
with the Thompson Late Model
championship points finale. Ryan Morgan enters the
race leading Woody Pitkat by just seven points in
search of his first Thompson title. Pitkat is
looking for his fourth Thompson championship, which
would be his second in the Late Models. The Late
Model feature will take place on Friday to allow
teams to compete in the American-Canadian Tour (ACT)
75-lap race on Saturday -- and a few ACT teams are
planning to compete for the $1,200 winning prize in
the 30-lap feature on Friday.
Also on Friday,
some of the top Street Stock drivers in the area
head to Thompson for a 25-lap, $1,000 to win
Street Stock Open.
Paul Newcomb has won both Open events this year, and
the driver of the No. 7 will look for a complete
sweep. Keith Johnson has entered in the Xtreme
Racing machine while Tanner Woodard, a rookie ACT
Flying Tiger competitor, will venture to Thompson
Speedway for the first time. Some of Thompson's
Vandi Auto Supply Limited Sportsman drivers will
also compete in the race.
Friday kicks off
the first of three Sunoco
Modified Triple Crown events set for 30 laps
and $1,500 to win each. The Sunoco Modifieds haven't
run since June due to the national tire shortage but
are back in a big way at the World Series. Action
will include qualifying and feature racing on all
three days with champions crowned on Sunday for both
the Triple Crown Series and the overall track title.
Keith Rocco looks for a record-breaking ninth
championship in the class after winning the first
two races of the year. However, he will have to go
up against names like Andrew Molleur, Mike
Christopher Jr. and Danny Cates.
The other
three feature races on Friday are the
Senior Tour Auto Racers
Modified and Late Model Sportsman divisions
plus the Vintage Outlaw
Modifieds for 15 laps each. A full afternoon
of Friday practice begins at 12:00pm for all
divisions except the ACT Tour, Pro All Star Series
(PASS) and Northeastern Midget Association (NEMA).
Friday qualifying goes green at 5:30pm.
Saturday's action begins early with practice at
10:00am and the first green flag of qualifying at
2:30pm. An eight-division card is lined up for
Twisted Tea World Series Saturday, headlined by
championship point events for the ACT and PASS
tours.
In the ACT Tour
points battle, which concludes at Seekonk Speedway
on October 23, Ben Rowe leads D.J. Shaw by a mere
one point. They will roll into Thompson to compete
against some of the track's best local competitors,
joined by names like former Seekonk Speedway
champion Ryan Kuhn, Seekonk weekly regular Jacob
"Rowdy" Burns, Woody Pitkat and Patrick Emerling.
Emerling, who will do double-duty by also
competing in the Thompson 300, is driving for
Hartwell Motorsports in the 75-lap feature. In his
only previous ACT start, Emerling failed to finish,
but is hoping to turn that around this time in a car
that has been to Victory Lane at Thompson before.
On the PASS front,
Derek Griffith looks to seal the PASS National
Championship in the World Series 75, coming off his
win at Thompson back in April during the Icebreaker.
He will be joined by Shaw, Rowe, Kuhn, Kate Re, Cory
Casagrande, PASS North championship leader Johnny
Clark, and others for their Saturday night
throwdown.
The stars of the
Sunoco Modifieds will
be back Saturday for their second 30-lap race in the
Triple Crown battle. The night of feature racing
will begin with the EXIT Realty Pro Truck Challenge.
Connor Souza has three victories on the season in
his No. 38 machine and looks to be the favorite in
the Truck championship race with three races to go.
Their 35-lap feature counts caution laps up until
lap 30 with the last five set to be green flag only.
The North East Mini Stock
Tour will crown their 2021 champion in their
own 20-lap feature, while the stars of the NEMA
Midgets are set to invade Thompson for 25 fast laps.
The New England Pro 4
Modifieds and Thompson's own
Vandi Auto Supply Limited
Sportsman wrap the Saturday card.
Heading into the 25-lap Sportsman feature, it is a
four-driver battle for the crown. Former track
champion Larry Barnett and Corey Fanning, both
winners in 2021, are tied at the top but only lead
Ryan Waterman by one point and Brent Gleason by two.
Every single spot will matter in their qualifying
and feature racing with the championship battle
coming right down to the wire.
On Sunday,
joining the Thompson 300, three more of Thompson's
championship chases come to a close. The finale of
the Sunoco Modified Triple
Crown Series will decide the Triple Crown
champion and the overall points season winner while
the Mini Stocks and
SK Light Modifieds
also have their own point battles at hand.
Anthony Bello leads the SK Light Modified total by a
healthy margin over Paul "Buddy" Charrette. In the
Mini Stocks, three-time winner Jared Roy is well on
his way to sealing the championship. The fast winged
warriors of the NEMA Lites will also join the Sunday
action to wrap a full weekend of competition.
Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park presents the
59th annual Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing
from Friday, October 8 to Sunday, October 10. The
weekend is highlighted by the $20,000-to-win Sunoco
Thompson 300 for the Outlaw Open Modified Series.
The 17-division program also includes the ACT Late
Model Tour, PASS Super Late Models, Sunoco Modified
Triple Crown Series, NEMA Midgets and Lites, all
local divisions, and much more.
Advance tickets are available at HappsNow
ticketing platform:
www.happsnow.com/event/Thompson-Speedway-Motorsports-Park-YHPQ.
Three-day general admission to the Sunoco World
Series is $75 for adults, $20 for kids ages 6-12,
and free for kids ages 5 and under. Fans can also
purchase single-day tickets or a two-day
Saturday-Sunday ticket. All three days of racing
will be televised live via pay-per-view on
