Coy Best in NEMA Lites
Coveted O'Brien
Memorial |
Hudson, NH - - On Sunday June 13th, the
Northeastern Midget Association returned to the high banks
of the Hudson Speedway, for the first time in nearly 20
years. A packed crowd greeted NEMA. Even more special, the
night was dedicated to long time club member, officer, and
supporter, Jim O'Brien.
Jim O'Brien was a legendary
car owner and club officer who, for a span of four decades,
personified the best of NEMA. At a very young age, he was
introduced to the Midgets by his father, and in 1970 joined
the NEMA family as a car owner. He earned feature wins with
Johnny Evans, driving his Falcon-powered Kurtis, and Doug
Cleveland, who powered to victory in his home-built "Pink
Panther" laydown chassis.
In 1975 he won the
Coca-Cola Dirt Track Championship with Hank Stevens at the
wheel.
Jim was an innovative fabricator and engine
builder with his sons by his side. He always built his own
cars and motors. For years he served as a NEMA contest board
member, once a vice -president, and for 13 consecutive years
as treasurer.
His life-long dedication to the club
was truly outstanding, and in 2003 he was inducted into the
NEMA Hall of Fame. However, most notably, Jim was always one
that stood- up and fought for fair competition and defended
the "little guy" - racers who ran with small budgets.
The night started off with Paul Scally and Jim
SantaMaria winning the MLM Diagnostics heat races.
In
the feature, Dennis O'Brien led the field to the green flag
in his Father's memory with Mike Pernesiglio in tow.
Quickly, third place starter Richie Coy pounced into second,
and Coy made his bid for the lead on lap eight.
With
Coy out front, behind him a number of drivers were beginning
their march to the front of the field. Boston Louie Winner
Jake Trainor in the Seymour 29, would move into second.
Jim SantaMaria, who started in the 12th position and PJ
Stergios who started 14th, were also making impressive
marches to the front. Stergios moved into 3rd on lap 21, and
SantaMaria moved into 4th on lap 24.
As the laps
wound down, Trainor would make a bid on Coy for the lead in
lapped traffic, but Coy held strong and beat Trainor back to
the line to take down a big victory in the O'Brien Memorial.
Trainor was second followed by Stergios, SantaMaria, Anthony
Nocella, Mike Pernesiglio, Kyle Valeri, Paul Scally, Joe
Bailey and Matt O'Brien.
"I had a great start and
jumped to second pretty early. When I got by Mikey for the
lead I just picked my marks and tried to hit them each lap.
After the first caution, Jake rolled up next to me I
thought, "OK, here we go...since he's been so strong all
season so far. Let's do this!" I got a good jump on the
start. As the laps went on and I wasn't feeling any
pressure, I actually started to think we were gonna be good.
I remember seeing Craig give us 10 to go and then the race
got really busy. Over those 10 laps it looked like he had 5
arms, with waving lap cars, showing the move over flag,
giving 5 and 2 to go. I don't know how many lap cars there
were, but they seemed to be everywhere. I didn't know how
close Jake was, so I was trying to get by them quickly. With
2 to go, two lap cars got together right in front of me. It
was close, but they all stayed going and I had to shoot a
gap between two of them. Thankfully, we all made it," said
Coy. "I have to thank my Dad and the whole crew," he said.
Outstanding Racer honors went to Ethan Dion,
Outstanding Mechanic/Innovator went to Johny Coy, Hard Luck
Award went to Brayden Egan, Longest Tow Award went to Pete
Pernesiglio, Paul Scally won the MLM Diagnostics First Heat,
and Jim Santa Maria won Heat 2, Richie Coy was awarded the
most feature laps led award, and Dennis O'Brien won the pole
sitter award. |
