NEMA Wins
at LEE USA’s Oktoberfest |
The Northeastern Midget Association rolled into the
Wrenn family's LEE USA Speedway this past Saturday for the
annual Oktoberfest event. A packed racing card highlighted
NEMA and the NEMA LITES as the stars of the evening. In the
NEMA feature, seven-time champion Randy Cabral came from
eighth place to win the division. In the NEMA LITES
division, Joey Bailey took down his first ever NEMA LITES
victory in a "wreckers to checkers" story, as just over a
week prior he found himself in the woods at Star Speedway.
In the LITES feature, when the green flag dropped, Joey
Bailey in the Scrivani 21 used the outside lane coming from
fourth place to the lead on the first lap. Behind him,
Rookie Dylan Coutu, continued to impress running around the
top three for most of the evening. Further back, Jake
Trainor in the Seymour 29 was slicing through the field, and
made it to second by lap six. Trainor tried to run down
Bailey, but was not making up ground. A restart with seven
laps remaining, created a duel between Bailey and Trainor,
with Bailey coming out on top. He went on to win by five
carlengths over Trainor, who clinched the 2021 Championship
for himself and Matt Seymour Racing. Avery Stoehr made
heroic passes in lapped traffic to finish third, followed by
Dylan Coutu, Richie Coy, Kyle Valeri, Randy Cabral, Braden
Egan, Kevin Merryfield and Tiana Kibbe.
"The Scrivani
family and crew all worked so hard over the last week. From
driving to Wisconsin back to Massachusetts and building a
complete car in a week, then coming out and winning right
out of the box is amazing," said Bailey. "I need to thank
everyone for the huge effort to get me my first victory," he
said.
In the NEMA feature, Matt O'Brien jumped out
from the pole into the lead on lap one. Randy Cabral, using
his patented outside moves, was quickly on the move to the
front. Cabral moved into third on lap three, and used the
bottom lane on O'Brien on lap five to take the lead. Once in
command, Cabral set sail. Avery Stoehr also used the outside
lane to get into second on lap seven, and the field settled
in from there. Cabral, running the quickest laps of the
feature, in the 13.4 range, was never seriously challenged
as he extended his points lead. Stoehr was second, followed
by John Zych, Matt O'Brien, Todd Bertrand, Ben Seitz, Paul
Scally, Doug Cleveland, Joey Bailey and Mike Horn.
"I
need to thank Tim Bertrand and my Dad Glen, he made the
right calls tonight and the car was awesome. I am dedicating
this win to Norm Wrenn III, who we lost last year, and his
family. Such a shame, and it was great to be able to win for
Norm and with his family here," said Cabral.
NEMA
MIDGETS and the LITES are up next at the Thompson Speedway
World Series of Racing next weekend. |
