Stoehr & Locke Storm Star Classic
|
Epping, NH -- On Saturday 9/16 the
Northeastern Midget Association rolled into Bobby Webber's
Star Speedway for one of New England's largest short track
races of the year, the 58th Annual Star Classic. Despite the
forecasted hurricane within the area, Webber was not going
to turn down the opportunity to race that easily. After a
slight schedule adjustment at 7am Saturday morning, NEMA
received the green flag to go racing!
The NEMA LITES
cars took the track as the sun began to set under a fiery
orange sunset and announcer Pete Falconi introduced the
stars and cars of the division. Ethan Dion #8 alongside
Avery Stoehr in the Parker Brothers' Racing #10 led the
field to the green flag. Stoehr jumped to the lead going
into turn one followed by Ben Mikitarian #9 and Danny Cugini
in the Jim O'Brien and Son's Engineering #16.
On lap
2, Stoehr held a couple car lengths lead over Mikitarian,
while Cugini went high in turn three which allowed for Alby
Ovitt in the Parker Brothers' Racing #20 to capitalize and
take over the third position. On the following lap, while
going into turn one, Ryan Locke in the Jim O'Brien and Son's
Engineering #61 drove deep into the turn to take over the
fourth position over Cugini.
While on lap 4, Chase
Locke in the Matt Seymour Racing #1 took over the fifth
position just as an early race caution called the field back
for a double file restart.
Stoehr alongside
Mikitarian led the field back to green flag racing. Stoehr
and Mikitarian raced side by side down the frontstretch, as
Stoehr took over the lead going into turn one. While going
down the backstretch, Chase Locke drove up next to brother,
Ryan Locke, to make the pass for 3rd. While going down the
front stretch, Jake Trainor in the Matt Seymour Racing #4,
worked his way into the 5th position over Cugini.
On
lap 6, going into turn one, R. Locke took the high groove
which allowed for Trainor to take over 4th.
Over the
next two laps, Stoehr continued to extend his lead by a
couple of car lengths over Mikitarian but C. Locke began to
close the gap between them and was soon on the back bumper
of Mikitarian. On lap 8, C. Locke and Mikitarian raced side
by side but going down the back stretch, C. Locke took the
low line to make the pass for 2nd over Mikitarian.
As C. Locke took over 2nd, he set his eyes on Stoehr and
began to close the 5 car length distance between them. On
lap 10, C. Locke was now on the back bumper of Stoehr and
made a pass for the lead on the following lap.
As
the leaders skillfully navigated through lapped traffic, C.
Locke, Stoehr, and Trainor separated themselves from the
rest of the field. Unfortunately, a mid race caution on lap
19 brought the field back to a double file restart. C. Locke
alongside Stoehr brought the field back to green. C. Locke
took the lead going into turn one, while Trainor was able to
take over the 2nd position from Stoehr going down the
backstretch followed by Mikitarian and Cugini to round out
the top 5.
Over the next several laps, C. Locke
created half a straightaway lead between him and Trainor
while Stoehr continued to hold a comfortable 3rd. While a
battle for 4th occurred between Mikitarian and Cugini, the
two raced side by side for 2 laps, ultimately, on lap 25,
Cugini took over 4th going out of turn four.
By lap
30, Cugini was able to close the gap between 3rd place,
Stoehr, and was on the back bumper setting up to make a
pass, when a late race caution with 5 laps remaining was
waved on the track and the drivers realigned for a double
file restart.
C. Locke and Trainor led the field to
green, C. Locke took the lead once again going into turn one
over Trainor. While on lap 33, Stoehr and Cugini raced side
by side for two laps until Stoehr was able to pull away from
Cugini going into turn one.
On lap 35, the checkered
flag flew for C. Locke, winning his second NEMA LITES race
of the season, over Trainor and Stoehr to round out victory
lane.
In an after race interview with Chase Locke,
he spoke a few words about how he took the lead,
"...Exciting, is really all I can say, I remember going
three wide on the bottom getting off of turn two and knew
that I just had to keep that momentum going."
The
top 10 were strong finishes by C.Locke #1, Trainor #4,
Stoehr #10, Cuigni #16, Kyle Valeri #17, R. Locke #61,
Mikitarian #9, Joe Bailey #21, Ryan MaCartney #24, Dylan
Coutu #53.
In the NEMA Midgets feature of the
evening, Doug Cleveland #87 alongside Matt O'Brien in the
Jim O'Brien and Son's Engineering #16 led the field green
flag for 35 laps. O'Brien took the lead going into turn one
followed by Mike Horn #93 and Cleveland.
On lap 3,
O'Brien began to open his lead over Horn by three car
lengths while, Avery Stoehr in the Bertrand Motorsports #39
raced into the top three by taking the high line going into
turn three to make the pass over Cleveland.
Over the
next several laps, the field began to spread out from one
another, O'Brien continued to lead over Horn and Stoehr.
On lap 8, a battle for second occurred as Stoehr was now
on the back bumper of Horn going down the backstretch and
attempted to take the low line from Horn going into turn
three but Horn was able to pull away and hold onto second.
Unfortunately, on lap 13, there was a caution thrown
on the track for the leader, O'Brien but he was able to keep
the car going and rejoin the tail of the field. The drivers
then realigned for a double file restart, Horn alongside
Stoehr brought the field back to the green flag. Horn was
able to jump to the early lead going into turn one, but
Stoehr remained on his back bumper. While going down the
backstretch on lap 14, Stoehr took the low line going into
turn three to take the lead over Horn and Randy Cabral in
the Bertrand Motorsports #47.
On lap 18, Stoehr
opened up his lead to nearly a straightaway while Cabral was
now on the back bumper of Horn.
Over the next
several laps, the drivers began to spread out amongst the
track and on lap 25, Stoehr began to skillfully navigate
through lapped traffic and increased his lead over Horn and
Cabral by more than a straightaway.
On lap 33 Cabral
took the high line going into turn three besides Horn to
take over the 2nd position.
For the second year in a
row, as the checkered waved in the air on lap 35, Stoehr and
Cabral went one-two respectively in the Star Classic in the
NEMA Midgets followed by Horn to round out victory lane.
In an after race interview with Stoehr, he commented on
his win after heartbreak in the last race. while leading as
motor trouble caused him to retire midway through. With less
than two weeks until the Star Classic, there was not enough
time to repair his current motor, instead they looked to a
motor that was in the corner of their shop, a motor that was
purchased in 1990 by his father, Russ Stoehr, and had wins
on by both his father and now crew chief, Keith Botelho.
The top ten were strong finishes by Stoehr #39, Cabral
#47, Horn #93, Paul Scally #30, Cleveland #87, Ryan Tidman
#83, Derrek Robbie #A1, Mike Pernesiglio #50, Dan Cugini
#16L, Dylan Rock #49
Both the NEMA Midgets and LITES
will be back in action at Russ Conway's Oktoberfest at Lee
USA Speedway on Saturday, September 30th.
In one of
the best and tightest points battles, next weekend the NEMA
Midgets race season comes to a close. As fourteen total
points separate 1st place Randy Cabral (856 pts), 2nd Avery
Stoehr (849 pts), and 3rd Paul Scally (842 pts). Who will
walk away as the 2023 NEMA Champion, will it be 2021 NEMA
Champion, Randy Cabral? 2022 NEMA Champion, Avery Stoehr? Or
will NEMA have a new champion, the Dangerous one, Paul
Scally? |
