THE NEMA ANGELILLO MEMORIAL
Remembering Gene and Marilyn |
|
|
ZYCH & CABRAL SCORE WINS AT THE ANGELILLO
MEMORIAL |
This past Saturday, both NEMA and the NEMA LITES
commemorated one of NEMA's most successful car owners in
club history, Gene and Marilyn Angelillo, at the New London
Waterford Speedbowl. For decades, they were the backbone of
NEMA. Starting in 1981 through 2009, Gene amassed 107 wins
and 14 owner's championships. All while Gene and Marilyn
served as president and secretary respectively for several
years.
They were a perfect partnership in NEMA and
in life. If Gene was the stern dad of NEMA, Marilyn was the
den mother, looking out for everyone, and every now and then
keeping Gene in line which was not an easy task!
The
Angelillo's first Waterford win came with Drew Fornoro
aboard in 1982. Over the next 30-plus summers, Russ Stoehr
and Joey Payne joined Fornoro in wins in the famed #45
Dumo's Desire. Gene's final win at the Waterford Speedbowl
was in 2009 for the Wings and Wheels with Russ Stoehr as the
driver.
NEMA announcer Pete Falconi announced the
stars and cars of the NEMA LITES division, as the 22 drivers
lined up and saluted their fans for the famous four-wide
parade lap.
The drivers realigned to their starting
positions as Chris Vose in the Vose Motorsports #3 led the
field to green for 30 fast laps. On the first lap, Brayden
Egan in the Egan Motorsports #59 starting from his outside
pole starting position took the lead followed by Joey Bailey
in the Scrivani Racing #21 and Ryan Locke in the O'Brien and
Sons Engineering #61.
On lap 2, Bailey, who set his
fastest lap of the race, took the lead over Egan and Locke.
On lap 6, we saw another change for the lead, as Randy
Cabral in the #47, who also set his fastest lap of the race,
took the lead from his 7th place starting position.
In the following laps, Cabral extended his lead in the
following laps over Bailey, Egan, and Locke. While on lap
10, Todd Bertrand in the Todd Bertrand Motorsports #48
worked his way from his 10th place starting position into
the top 5.
As the field spread out amongst the
track, on lap 15, Bertrand closed the gap between him and
4th place Locke and on the following lap, Bertrand was able
to take over 4th and began to chase down 3rd place Egan.
While on lap 22, Bertrand was able to close to the gap
and was now on the back bumper of Egan, and made the pass
for the 3rd position. Less than 3 laps later, Bertrand took
2nd over Bailey and began to chase down Cabral.
On
the final lap for the NEMA LITES, the checkered flag flew
for Cabral, who had just over a 3 second lead over Bertrand
followed by Bailey.
In a post race interview with
Cabral, "It's great to win a prestigious race like this one,
Gene meant a lot to this club. I never in a million years
would have thought that I would be able to chase down his
records but to win in my own car, makes it that much
sweeter."
To round out the top 10 in the NEMA LITES
were strong finishes by Cabral #47, Bertrand #48, Bailey
#21, Egan #59, Locke #61, Kyle Valeri #17, Dan Cuigini #16,
Alby Ovitt #20, Dyan Coutu #53, and Avery Stoehr #10.
In the NEMA Midgets portion of the Angellilo Memorial,
John Zych Jr. in the #9 started on the pole alongside Mike
Pernesiglio in the #50. Zych led the field going into turn
one for 25 fast laps around the Speedbowl followed by Randy
Cabral in the Bertrand Motorsports #47 and Matt O'Brien in
the O'Brien and Son's Engineering #16.
On lap 3,
Paul Scally in the #30, who raced from his 7th place
starting position, broke into the top 3. Scally kept his
momentum going to close the gap between him and Cabral.
Cabral followed close behind Zych taking the high groove
around the track to try to take over first just as a caution
flew on the track on lap 5.
On the double file
restart, Zych once again took the lead going into turn one
with Cabral on his outside followed by Scally. Cabral worked
the outside groove just outside of the back bumper of Zych
for 3 laps until Scally took the 2nd position away from
Cabral going into turn one on lap 8.
In the laps
that followed, the field began to spread out from one
another and Zych extended his lead over Scally and Cabral by
half a straightaway.
On lap 15, Avery Stoehr in the
Bertrand Motorsports #39, worked his way through the field
from his 8th place starting position into the top 3 over
Cabral.
Throughout the remainder of the race, Scally
tried to close the gap between him and Zych, but Zych was
able to maintain his lead and skillfully navigate through
lapped traffic. On lap 25 when the checkered flag flew, Zych
had over a 2 second lead over Scally and Stoehr.
In
an after race interview, Zych commented, " It feels like
it's been a long time...too long. It feels great to get this
monkey off our back. It's helpful to start on the pole but
if we could get there and stay there, it would be really
hard to pass us on the outside tonight. The car was a rocket
tonight"
To round out the top 10 in the NEMA Midgets
were strong finishes by Zych #9, Scally #20, Stoehr #39,
Dylan Rock #49, Cabral #47, O'Brien #16, Pernesiglio #50,
Ryan Tidman #83, Doug Cleveland #87, and Mike Horn #93.
The NEMA Midgets and LITES are back in action this
coming weekend August 26th at Monadnock Speedway for the
Iron Mike Scrivani Memorial Race. |

Gene and Marilyn Angelillo were, for decades, the
backbone of NEMA. Starting in 1983 Gene amassed 107 wins and
14 owner's championships. He also was president of the club
for several years with Marilyn serving as secretary. The
majority of his success came with Drew Fornoro, with Joey
Payne, Jr. and Russ Stoehr also winning championships for
him. Racing royalty drove Gene's cars, including the late
Ted Christopher, who won for him at Waterford, Jimmy
Broderick, a Waterford champion, and Joe Gosek, a Classic
winner at Oswego.
They were a perfect partnership in
NEMA and in life. If Gene was the stern dad of NEMA, Marilyn
was the den mother, looking out for everyone, and every now
and then keeping Gene in line (not an easy task)!
Gene's legacy transcends more than NEMA. Along with way he
picked up an ARDC championship, and his #45 Dumo's Desire
midget raced everywhere from Florida to Arizona. Gene had
the means to field almost any type of race car, even on a
national level, but his heart was forever with NEMA and the
midgets.
While their accomplishments in NEMA are well
noted, their devotion to family was paramount in their
lives. If anyone could mellow Gene, it was his grandkids.
Marilyn and Gene absolutely adored daughter Laura, and
grandkids Tiana, Cami, and Brooke. Marilyn left us in 2007,
Gene in 2010. Laura kept the team going for one more year,
winning a last championship for Gene and Marilyn with Russ
Stoehr. |
