1-2 for Parker Brothers' Racing Teammates |
Even after a cancellation at Star Speedway due to
rain on Saturday, the race weekend was not a complete
washout. The NEMA LITES traveled to Hudson International
Speedway on Sunday, June 18th, for the Jim O'Brien Memorial.
This memorial race celebrates Jim O'Brien, a
legendary car owner and club officer who, for a span of four
decades, personified the best of NEMA. He was an innovative
fabricator and mechanic, and with his sons, Matt and Dennis,
by his side, he always built his own cars and motors. For
years he served as a NEMA contest board member, once a
vice-president, and for 13 consecutive years as treasurer.
His life-long dedication to the club was truly outstanding,
and in 2003 he was inducted into the NEMA Hall of Fame.
NEMA Announcer Pete Falconi announced the stars and cars
of the NEMA LITES division, as the drivers lined up and
saluted their fans for the famous four-wide parade lap.
The drivers realigned to their starting positions as
Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 led the field to green
flag racing for 50 laps, around Hudson Speedway for the Jim
O'Brien Memorial. Going into turn one, from his third place
starting position, Brayden Egan in the #59 jumped into the
lead followed by Mike Pernesiglio in the Ventotto Properties
#28. On lap 2, Avery Stoehr in the Parker Brothers' Racing
#10, Joey Bailey in the Scrivani Racing #21, and Randy
Cabral in the #47 would take over positions 3 through 5, but
then would be called back with an early race caution.
On the restart, Egan brought the field to green again,
Pernesiglio would take the lead going into turn three
followed by Stoehr. On lap 4, a battle for the third
position between Bailey and Egan began just as the caution
flag was waved. Pernesiglio led the field to the green, but
going into turn one, Stoehr took the lead. Followed by
Bailey, who took the low line from Pernesiglio coming out of
turn four to take over the second position.
On lap
8, Stoehr, Bailey, and Pernesiglio began to spread out as
Danny Cugini in Jim O'Brien & Son's Engineering #16 took
over the 4th position following Alby Ovitt in the Parker
Brothers' Racing #20.
A couple of laps later, on lap
10, after a caution on the track, Stoehr brought the field
back to green followed by Bailey and Cugini. Ovitt then
battled for the fourth position over Pernesiglio and Cabral.
By lap 15, the top 3, Stoehr, Bailey, and Cugini
began to spread themselves out, with a few car lengths
distance between one another. Ovitt, on the move, began
closing the distance between him and Cugini just as the
caution flag flew on the track.
The drivers
realigned in double file, as Stoehr brought the field back
to green again followed by Bailey. Ovitt tried to take the
low line from Bailey, but settled in for third over Cugini.
With 25 laps down and 25 to go, Stoehr had a sizable
lead over Bailey, Ovitt, Cugini, and Cabral. Followed by
Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports #17 who broke out of
the pack up to the sixth place position followed by Dylan
Coutu in the Redline Motorsports #53, who made his way from
the tail end of the field after an early race caution.
On lap 28, Stoehr began to encounter lap traffic where
Bailey was able to use this to his advantage and close the
gap between him and Stoehr. By lap 30, going into turn 3,
Bailey was racing side by side with Stoehr. On lap 33, as
Stoehr on the high line and Bailey on the low line were
navigating through lap traffic, battling side by side for
the lead, unfortunately, Bailey and a lapped car got
together bringing out another caution. Bailey took the car
off the track to get checked out but then rejoined the tail
of the field.
The drivers then realigned in double
file with the Parker Brothers' Racing Teammates, Stoehr and
Ovitt on the front row. Stoehr then regained the lead over
Ovitt followed by Cabral and Cugini, and Valeri. By lap 36,
Stoehr extended his lead to about fourth car lengths over
Ovitt.
On lap 45, Stoehr began to encounter lapped
traffic again, as Ovitt was able to use this to his
advantage and close the distance between him and Stoehr. As
the white flag was flown, Stoehr and Ovitt raced side by
side going into turn one, but Stoehr was able to drive away
from Ovitt going down the backstretch. Unfortunately coming
to the checkered flag, a caution flag was flown on the
field, which brought back the scoreboard to lap 48.
On the late race caution restart, the Parker Brothers'
Racing Teammates, Stoehr and Ovitt lined up on the front row
once again. Stoehr jumped to the lead over Ovitt, while
Cugini made a move for third over Cabral.
As the
checkered flags were thrown, for the second year in a row,
Stoehr took down the win in the Jim O'Brien Memorial
followed by Ovitt and Cugini.
In an after race
interview in victory lane, Stoehr commented, "There was a
lot of competition throughout the race, there was always
somebody there. Which reminded me that these are not easy to
win, but I am happy to have a great team behind me."
Ovitt remarked on his second place finish, "Really happy
for my teammate, Avery, and to go 1-2 today, just shows how
strong our team really is. This is my third, 2nd place
finish this season so we just have to carry this momentum
into Wiscasset next weekend."
To round out the top
3, Cugini commented, "Just really grateful to be able to put
the car up here in victory lane for a podium finish for my
car owners' (Dennis and Alicia) memorial race."
To
round out the top 10, where strong finishes by: Stoehr #10,
Ovitt #20, Cugini #16, Valeri #17, Cabral #47, Locke #1,
Coutu #53, Pernesiglio #28, Bailey #21, Scally #30
Both NEMA Midgets and NEMA LITES will be back for more green
flag racing this coming weekend at Wiscasset Speedway on
Saturday, June 24th. |
