Trainor Takes Open Wheel Wednesday |
Seekonk Speedway (June 28, 2023) - -The
NEMA LITES traveled to Seekonk Speedway for the Annual Open
Wheel Wednesday.
Alongside NEMA's announcer, Pete
Falconi, fellow NEMA LITES driver, Dylan Coutu joined Pete
in the announcers' booth to help call the race action.
The stars and cars of the NEMA LITES division were
introduced as the drivers lined up and saluted their fans
for the famous four-wide parade lap.
In a strong
field of 22 cars, the drivers realigned in their starting
positions as Chris Vose in the #3 led the field to green
flag racing for 50 fast laps.
Vose took the lead
going into turn one with Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94
right on the outside followed by Connor Souza in the #35.
While Paul Scally in the #30, Brayden Egan in the #59 and
Joey Bailey in the Scrivani Racing #21 went three wide
racing for positions 4 through 6. Unfortunately, coming to
the close of lap 1, a red flag was flown for Mike
Pernesiglio in the Ventotto Properties #28 whom had gotten
upside down in turn 4, also involved was the #99 of Kyle
Ferrucci and the #61 of Ryan Locke. All drivers were able to
get out of their cars and were OK.
Once the red flag
was lifted, the drivers fired their engines once again and
realigned double file for a complete restart. Vose once
again led the field back to the green flag. Vose and Kibbe
raced side by side, but going into turn three, Kibbe running
the middle grove was able to take the lead from Vose while
Souza and Bailey battled for the 3rd and 4th positions.
By lap 3, Souza was alongside Kibbe, followed by Bailey,
and Scally. While Matt Seymour Racing team cars, PJ Stergios
in the #4 and Jake Trainor in the #29 made their way through
the field and were on the back of Scally.
On lap 4,
Souza took the lead, but unfortunately spun in front of the
field going into turn 2. All drivers were able to split on
either side of Souza and avoid him as faced the infield. The
field was then brought back to the red flag once again for
oil around the track.
Once the track crew cleaned up
the oil and speedy dry was scattered, the drivers aligned
for a double file restart with Kibbe on pole followed by
Bailey on the outside. Going down the backstretch, Kibbe,
Bailey, and Scally went three wide for the first position,
but Bailey went on to lead lap 5 followed by Scally and
Trainor. While on lap 6 Scally took the lead over Bailey by
taking the low line coming out of turn 4.
On lap 7
going down the backstretch, Trainor and Stergios were on the
back bumper of second place Bailey. Less than half a lap
later going into turn one, Trainor made his move by taking
the low line to take second away from Bailey. The next time
around, Stergios would make the same move on Bailey to take
over the third position.
With 14 laps complete,
Scally had about a 5 car length advantage over second place
Trainor followed by Stergios, Bailey, and Chase Locke in the
Matt Seymour Racing #1. With 16 laps complete, Scally
started to encounter lapped traffic which allowed Trainor to
close the gap between each other.
As Scally came to
the crossed flags of half way through the race, Trainor was
now on the back bumper followed by Stergios, Bailey, and
Locke.
In a great battle for the lead, on lap 30,
Trainor raced side by side with Scally for a couple of laps
and took the lead on lap 32 and began to extend his new
lead.
On lap 40, Trainor continued to extend his
lead to a straightaway over second place Scally, followed by
Stergios, Bailey, and Todd Bertrand in the Todd Bertrand
Racing in the #48.
With two laps remaining on lap
48, Stergios tried to take second away from Scally, but
Scally was able to pull away from Stergios to keep second.
As the checkered flag flew, Trainor went on to win
the Open Wheel Wednesday for the second year in a row
followed by Scally and Stergios.
In an interview in
victory lane, Trainor, commented coming off of his most
recent win becoming the youngest and only rookie driver to
win the Little 500 at Anderson Speedway in Indiana, "Scally
led a great first half of the race, with a lot of speedy dry
on the track, I just had to settle in and wait for it to
burn off."
To round out the top 10 were strong
finishes by: Trainor #29, Scally #30, Stergios #4, Bailey
#21, Bertrand #48, Avery Stoehr #10, Ben Mikitarian #9, Kyle
Valeri #17, Alby Ovitt #20, and Chase Locke #1
Both
the NEMA Midgets and the NEMA LITES are back in action this
coming weekend, Sunday July 2nd, at Lee USA Speedway.
