Cabral Captures Speedbowl Clash

Waterford, CT- After a break in the schedule that seemed both too long and too short at the same time, the NEMA LITES traveled back to the New London Waterford Speedbowl this past Saturday.

NEMA would like to welcome Ava Lomardo and family as well as Jack Dumas who both made their debut in the NEMA LITES.

As the NEMA LITES took the track for their 35 lap feature, Chris Vose in the Vosey Motorsports #3 alongside Brayden Egan in the Egan Motorsports #59 led the field to the green flag. Vose led the field into turn one followed by Egan. Mike Pernesiglio in the #28 was able to take the highline and drive up alongside Egan going down the backstretch where the two raced side by side over the next two laps. Until lap 3 where Egan pulled ahead of Pernesiglio.

On lap 4, Vose led the pack followed by Egan, Pernesiglio, Joey Bailey in the Nick Poe #2, and Randy Cabral in the #47 to round out the top five. The following lap, Bailey drove up alongside Pernesiglio going into turn one where the two raced side by side until Bailey took over third going into turn three. On lap 6 going into turn one, as Pernesiglio took the high groove, Cabral took the low line to drive up alongside Pernesiglio on the backstretch and take over fourth.

On lap 8, as the leading pack began to spread out amongst themselves, Vose maintained his lead over Egan. Bailey, continuing his charge to the front, was now on the back bumper of Egan, was able to get a run going out of two and drive up alongside Egan on the backstretch grabbing the low line into turn three to take over second. Bailey now looked to close the four car length gap between him and current leader Vose.

Over the next several laps, as Vose continued to lead over Bailey, a tight battle for third occurred between Egan and Cabral. As Cabral drove up alongside the outside of Egan multiple times, Egan was able to continue to hold onto third. Until lap 15, when Cabral was able to get a run going out of two and drove up alongside the inside of Egan on the backstretch. Cabral then took the low line going into turn three to take over third. Just as a caution flag was flown on the track and the field re-racked and stacked for a double file restart. Vose alongside Bailey led the field back to the green flag, as the two raced side by side going into turn one, until Bailey was able to get a drive going out of turn two to take the lead down the backstretch. At the same time, Cabral, who had restarted in the fourth position, worked the high groove beside Egan to take over third.

On the following lap, going into turn one, Cabral took the high line into turn one and drove up alongside Vose where the two raced side by side for the next lap. Until lap 17, when Cabral was able to take over second going down the backstretch,

As the pack once again spread out amongst themselves, Cabral, now on the move, worked to close a six car length lead that Bailey had created over the past several laps. With each lap, Cabral closed the distance between him and Bailey. On lap 19, Cabral drove up alongside Bailey, but Bailey was able to continue his drive and hold onto the lead going down the backstretch. As the two battled for first over the next several laps, Cabral took the low line going into turn one on lap 21 and drove up along the inside of Bailey on the backstretch. Cabral was then able to continue his drive going into turn three to take over first to lead lap 22. Unfortunately, going into turn one, the caution flag was flown for Bailey. The drivers then re-aligned in a double file restart, this time, Cabral alongside Egan led the field back to the green flag.

Cabral took the lead once again going into turn one followed by Egan and Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports #17, who worked his way through the field from his 10th place starting position.

On lap 24, going down the backstretch, as Valeri was on the back bumper of Egan, Valeri took the low line going into turn three to drive up alongside Egan, to take over second coming out of turn four. Valeri now set his eyes on closing the half a straightaway distance from him and first place, Cabral.

While on the following lap, going down the backstretch, Dylan Coutu in the REDline Motorsports #53 was on the back bumper of Egan and took the low line going into turn three and drove up alongside Egan to take over third coming out of turn four.

As Coutu, Egan, and Paul Scally in the #30 to round out the top 5, the three raced in a tight pack coming to the front stretch, as Scally took the low line going into turn one and took over fourth over Egan on lap 26.

Over the next several laps, as the field spread out amongst themselves and laps dwindled down, the checkered flag was waived for Cabral followed by Valeri and Coutu to round out the podium.

In a victory lane interview, Randy Cabral commented on his first NEMA LITES win of the 2024 season, "Just want to thank Waterford Speedbowl and all the fans that have come out and supported. As well as my dad who put together multiple racecars after racing at IRP in Indy earlier this week. This win goes out to Chuck Welling, Brian Cleveland and all of the NEMA family that we have lost. These are all people that I have grown up with and have made me who I am."

To round out the top ten were strong finishes by: Randy Cabral #47, Kyle Valeri #17, Dylan Coutu #53, Paul Scally #30, Brayden Egan #59, Joey Bailey #2, Mike Pernesiglio #28, Tiana Kibbe #94, Todd Bertrand #35, and Jack Dumas #26.

As we approach our late summer stretch of races, Randy Cabral's win tightens up the NEMA LITES championship points battle between him and current points leader, Kyle Valeri. While in the NEMA division, a battle forms as well between Avery Stoehr, Randy Cabral, and Paul Scally. Both the mighty NEMA Midgets and the NEMA LITES will take the next weekend off, but will be back in action on Sunday, September 1st for the Butch Walsh Memorial at Wiscasset Speedway.
