Stoehr and Trainor Score NEMA Wins at Wiscasset
Speedway
|
On Sunday, September 1st, the mighty NEMA Midgets
and NEMA LITES traveled to the Wiscasset Speedway in Maine.
Drivers, owners, and members of the club were greeted with
welcoming and friendly smiles from track owners, Vanessa and
Richard Jordan as well their entire staff for their
pronounced Boss Hog 150.
NEMA honored Butch Walsh,
driver of the #55, member of the NEMA club starting in 1966
when he became NEMA Rookie of the year, leading the club as
president, in addition to winning numerous feature events
and a driver championship in 1973. In memory of Butch Walsh,
longtime friends, JC Crossley presented $555.55 gifted from
Richard Savary owner of Pine Hill Auto in Holbrook, Mass,
and Dave Savary owner of George and Ken's Collision to both
the NEMA Lites winner, Jake Trainor and NEMA winner, Avery
Stoehr.
The NEMA Midgets were the first to roll onto
the track for their 25 lap feature, as Doug Cleveland in the
#87 alongside Derek Robbie in the #A1 led the field to the
green flag. Cleveland and Robbie raced side by side going
into turn one and through turn three, but coming out of turn
four, Cleveland was able to get a run going from the low
line to lead lap one. But Robbie remained close to the back
bumper of Cleveland.
On the following lap, coming
out of turn four, Robbie took a look to the outside of
Cleveland where the two raced side by side for the whole
lap, but Cleveland was still able to edge out Robbie for the
lead.
Going into turn one on the lap 3, Robbie
tucked in behind Cleveland where Robbie's teammate, Mike
Horn in the #93 raced for the third position. While, on the
move, Avery Stoehr in the Bertrand Motorsports #39, worked
his way to the back bumper of Horn.
On lap 6, while
going into turn one, as Cleveland took the high grove,
Robbie saw an opening on the inside line, where Robbie was
able to drive to the inside of Cleveland to make the pass
for the lead while coming out of turn two and down the
backstretch. At the same time, we saw a battle for third
occur between Horn and Stoehr, as going into turn three,
Stoehr drove up alongside the outside of Horn to take over
the third position. Stoehr, now on the move, was on the back
bumper of second place, Cleveland. Stoehr, on the high line
of the track, got a run going out of turn four to then take
over second.
On the following lap, as Stoehr worked
to close the couple of car lengths gap between him and
current leader, Robbie, Horn looked to the inside of the
Cleveland going down the backstretch to break back into the
top 3.
Over the next several laps, as Stoehr worked
the high grove of the track, he was quickly on the back
bumper of Robbie and was able to get a run going to drive up
alongside the outside of Robbie coming out of turn four
where the two raced side by side for the next lap. Until
coming out of turn two on lap 10, where Stoehr was able to
make the pass and became the new race leader going down the
backstretch.
Once Stoehr took the lead, he began to
drive away from Robbie and Horn created nearly a half a
straightaway between them.
As the field spread out
amongst themselves, with just 5 laps remaining, Stoehr
continued to drive away, now extending his lead over Robbie
by a straightaway, when a caution flag was waved on the
track.
The drivers realigned for a double file
restart, Stoehr alongside Robbie led the field back to the
green flag. Stoehr led the field going into turn one, but a
change in position for second occurred, as Horn was able to
get a good restart from his third place starting position,
to take second over Robbie.
On lap 22, as Stoehr
once again opened his lead to nearly half a straightaway
over Horn. A battle for third occurred between Robbie and
Randy Cabral in the Bertrand Motorsports #74, while going
down the backstretch, Cabral looked to the inside of Robbie
where the two raced side by side until the front stretch
where Cabral was able to make the pass on Robbie to take
over third.
On lap 25, the checkered flag waved for
Stoehr, followed by Horn and Cabral to round out the podium.
In a victory lane interview, Stoehr, commented on
his win, "I am really glad to be back here at Wiscasset
Speedway, I look forward to being back here next year and
doing this again. I am just very fortunate to be here and do
what I love to do."
The top five were strong
finishes by: Avery Stoehr #39, Mike Horn #93, Randy Cabral
#74, Derek Robbie #A1, and Dylan Rock #49.
In the
NEMA LITES feature, Ethan Dion in the #8 alongside Tiana
Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 led the field to the green
flag for 50 fast, continuous laps. Going into turn one, Dion
led the field followed by Kibbe and Joey Bailey in the #2.
On the following lap, Bailey drove up alongside
KIbbe, looking to take over the second position, where the
two raced side by side until going into turn one on the
following lap where Bailey was able to continue his drive on
the high line to take over second.
While Dion
continued to lead the pack by a few car lengths over Bailey
and Kibbe, a close battle between Brayden Egan in the Egan
Motorsports #59 and Jake Trainor in the Matt Seymour Racing
#29 occurred for the fourth position over the next several
laps. As Trainor worked the outside groove of Egan,
ultimately, on lap 15 going into turn three, Trainor took
the low line from Egan to take over the fourth on lap 16.
Trainor now set his eyes on closing the car length
gap between him and third place, Kibbe. While going down the
front stretch on lap 18, Trainor drove up alongside Kibbe on
the outside and was able to take over third going into turn
one. On the same lap, going down the backstretch, Trainor,
on the move, was now on the bumper of Bailey. While coming
out of turn four, Trainor was able to keep his car low to
drive up alongside the inside of Bailey to take over second.
As Dion continued to hold a strong four car length
lead over Trainor, and Bailey. Trainor was on the move and
began closing the gap between the two over the next several
laps. While on lap 22, Trainor, now on the back bumper of
Dion, took the low line going into turn three to take over
the lead.
Once Trainor took the lead, he immediately
created a four car length distance that grew to nearly half
a straightaway between Dion and Bailey as the cross flags
were thrown, as we saw a tight battle for fourth between
Kibbe and Egan.
On lap 29, as Trainor extended his
lead to a full straight away over Dion and Bailey, a battle
for second occurred. Bailey was now on the back bumper of
Dion on frontstretch and took the low line from Dion going
into turn one, but Dion was able to continue his drive
coming out of turn two. Dion and Bailey then raced side by
side going into turn three, but going down the front
stretch, Bailey was able to take over second.
By lap
31, Trainor extended his lead to over a straightaway over
Bailey, unfortunately, third place, Dion retired to the
infield, as there was now a close battle for third between
Kibbe and Egan.
As the laps began to dwindle down,
with just 10 laps to go, Trainor had now extended his lead
to half a lap over Bailey followed by another half a
straightaway between him and Kibbe.
As the checkered
flag waved for the 2x NEMA LITES champion, Trainor, followed
by Bailey, and for the first time earning a podium position,
Kibbe.
In a victory lane interview, Trainor
commented on his win, "I love this place, a big fast circle,
how can you not love this track? I didn't know I had half a
track lead, I was just running like Joey was right on my
back bumper. It is good to get back to victory lane."
The top ten were strong finishes by: Jake Trainor #29,
Joey Bailey #2, Tiana Kibbe #94, Bayden Egan #59, Dylan
Coutu #53, Randy Cabral #47, Kyle Valeri #17, Chase Locke
#1, Mike Pernesiglio #28, and Ava Lombardo #21.
Both
the NEMA Midgets and NEMA LITES will be back in action at
Star Speedway, 'The Place to Race' on Saturday, September
14th. You will not want to miss out on the action packed day
of racing as the drive for the championship has begun with
just three races left for the Midgets and five races left
for the LITES. We hope to see you there!
