Led by Bertrand, the NEMA Lites Took the
Granite State Derby with Blistering New Speed |
Winchester, NH - This past Saturday, the NEMA LITES
traveled to the newly paved Monadnock Speedway for the JDV
Productions 3rd Annual Granite State Derby. The day began
with drivers turning laps nearly 1 second faster than last
year with newfound speed on the resurfaced track and ending
the feature event with the winner parked in victory lane
with a well worn right rear.
Tiana Kibbe in the
Kibbe Racing #94 alongside Trent Goodrow in the Keller
Motorsports #44 led the field to the green flag. Going down
the front stretch, Kibbe and Goodrow raced side by side and
Kibbe led them into turn one, but coming out of two, with a
good launch, Goodrow was able to drive by to inherit the
lead going down the backstretch.
On the second lap,
not wasting any time starting from his fourth place starting
position, Todd Bertrand in the Todd Bertrand Racing #48,
going into turn one took the lead. Unfortunately once
Bertrand took the lead and began to distance himself from
the pack, there was a caution thrown on the field.
As the cars re-stacked for a double file restart, Bertrand
led the field back to green flag racing, as Paul Scally in
the #30 took the low line going into turn one to take over
second. Then, going down the backstretch, Chase Locke in the
Matt Seymour Racing #1, took the low line to take over
third.
On lap 3, as Bertrand continued to lead the
pack, Locke, going into turn one took the low line to take
second from Scally. Followed by Matt Seymour Racing's Jake
Trainor in the #29 and Joey Bailey in the #2 to round out
the top 5.
Over the next several laps, Scally kept
Locke within reach, and on lap 7, while entering into turn
three, Scally made a pass to regain second. Scally now set
his eyes on Bertrand to try and reel him in, as he held a
comfortable lead over the pack.
As the laps ticked
down, Bertrand extended his lead to nearly a straightaway,
over Scally followed by Locke, and Trainor. While on lap 13,
a battle for fifth began between Bailey and Randy Cabral in
the #47.
On lap 19, Bertrand skilfully maneuvered
through lapped traffic as he continued his straightaway
lead. Unfortunately, a few laps later on lap 22, a caution
flag was flown on the field and Bertrand's lead was negated.
As the field re-racked and stacked in a double file
line-up, Bertrand alongside Scally led the field back to
green flag racing. Bertrand took command and led going into
turn one as Locke was also able to follow suit with Bertrand
to take over second. But unfortunately, another yellow flag
was flown before a lap was completed and the cars realigned
in their double file line-up.
Bertrand, once again,
led the field back to the green flag and was able to regain
some of his lead over Scally by three car lengths by the
close of the lap. All while Trainor was able to capitalize
on this restart and take the high line going into turn one
to take third over Locke.
With five laps remaining,
Bertrand continued to cruise in the lead, a tight battle
occurred for second between Scally and Trainor. While at the
same time, Cabral was able to get by Locke to take over
fourth.
Unluckily, with two laps remaining, another
caution flag was flown on the track as Scally and Trainor
bumped wheels on the tight bullring, resulting in Trainor
facing the wrong way in the infield. The field re-racked
with Bertrand alongside Scally on the front row. Bertrand
once again took the lead going into turn one while Cabral
was able to take the low line going into turn one to take
second over Scally.
As the white flag waved,
Bertrand led the pack, followed by Cabral and Scally. A
battle for the fourth and fifth position occurred between
Bailey, Locke, and Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports
#17. As Bailey and Valeri took the low line going into turn
one to take the fourth and fifth position, respectively.
On lap 30, the checkered flag waved in the air for
Bertrand who led 29 of the 30 lap feature, followed by
Cabral and Scally to round out the top 3.
In a
victory lane interview, Bertrand commented on his win, "I
really wanted to get this win, when I saw I was starting
fourth, I thought, if there is any day to get it done, it's
today. But I really have to thank Josh (JDV Productions), I
really wanted to support him and all that he has done to
build up this track and facility."
To round out the
top 10, were strong finishes by: Bertand #48, Cabral #47,
Scally #30, Bailey #2, Valeri #17, Locke #1, Mike
Pernesiglio #28, PJ Stergios #88W, Trainor #29, and Kibbe
#94.
The mighty NEMA Midgets and NEMA LITES take a
couple of weekends off and will prepare for the New London
Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday, May 25th for the 16th
Annual Shane Hammond Memorial.
There is no better
place nor track to honor Shane Hammond, who drove the
renowned yellow and blue NEMA #37. The Speedbowl holds a
special place, near and dear to Deb Marvuglio, Shane's
Mother, as this is where their NEMA journey first began. In
Shane's honor, the Shane Hammond Believe Foundation has
changed the way drivers, clubs, and tracks think about
racing while continuing to spread the message of safety
first.
You will not want to miss out on the NEMA
fast action at the Speedbowl, we hope to see you there!
